    First Story Manifests Characteristic Undertones

CCF22082009_00001 Heidi has written a story.  In classic Heidi style, it is full of exuberance, imagination, and surprise...and it is not "short-winded," if there is such a concept.  We enjoy it and think you will, too.  The project turned out to be a high percentage of our third grade (NZ Year 4) English grammar studies.  It certainly was more interesting than workbook exercises.  Heidi would love to receive feedback, if you care to share your thoughts.  You can download it here.

    A little brag work

09-02 009 We don't intend to use this blog to brag incessantly about our kids...but God seems to have given them some talents to be developed.  They are learning to appreciate the arts in His creation.

Heidi is a budding artist.  She has natural talent.  We are excited about the possibility of a neighbour giving her private art lessons in exchange for Lori giving the neighbour's son piano lessons.  We are working on the details there.

Daniel shows promise of being a gifted musician.  He loves music.  It showed up when he was about nine months old.  In a furlough meeting where there was not an evening nursery, the man leading music on the platform was extremely distracted, and pleased, to see baby Daniel trying to conduct each and every hymn. Since the age of one, Daniel has enjoyed sitting at the piano and composing his own music. Mostly it is quite avant-garde, or could be classfiied as modern (hee, hee).  But, he doesn't bang like many children.  He listens, carefully, and attempts to make it beautiful.  One recent day we managed to grab a quick excerpt.  You'll be surprised.  Remember...he's only five!  Hear his composition, and see his self-defense on our video blog here.

    Big Boy Five

Our sweet little boy is five.  Somewhere between four and five he morphed from a little boy to a big boy.  He loves all manly things.  He loves his sister.  And he is very, very happy to be starting school (at home).  The pictures says so much about him.  Enjoy the album Daniel - 2009.

Is It Me? Is It the Kids? Is it Normal?

This is a true account.  Names have not been changed to protect the guilty.

    The Cast

    Daniel the son age 4
    Heidi the daughter age 8
    Lori the mum {mom}
can't ever remember her age anymore, but family says she is 37 (is that right?)
    Narrator

    The Circumstances

We have a schedule.  Each Monday evening we play a game as a family.  Scott's brother gave us "Worst Case Scenario" in which you guess the best option for escaping random unlikely events.  Our kids love it, and we have played it a fair bit recently.  Friday mornings we have cooked breakfast.  Lori would never bother to cook breakfast, herself preferring (its an addiction, really) an easy bowl of homemade muesli {granola}.  The rest of the family love to eat (not prepare or clean up) cooked breakfast.  Friday morning is a compromise.

    The Catastrophe

Narrator One recent morning, Lori was sitting in the office.  She had finished her morning devotions and decided to write an email since the kids were still doing their morning chores.
Heidi (entering office) I don't feel like having cereal today.  Can we have cooked breakfast?
    Lori This isn't Friday.
Heidi Well, can we have cooked breakfast anyway?
Lori Why don't you make French toast?   You know how to do that now.
Heidi I don't feel like having French toast.  Can we have pancakes?
Lori I think you could make pancakes.  We've done that together a lot.  Are you willing to clean up the mess?
Heidi YES! (bounces out of the office and then yells to her brother)  Daniel, we can make pancakes!
Narrator Lori proceeds to work on her email.  It is one that takes careful thought.  She becomes somewhat absorbed and oblivious to noises from the kitchen.
Heidi (entering office) Mummy, I can't read some of the amounts on the recipe.
Lori Just do the ones you know, and I'll be in the kitchen in a minute.
Heidi OK. (bounces out of the office)
Narrator A while later, Lori finishes her email and goes to check on the breakfast team.
Lori (entering kitchen) That looks like a lot of batter.  Did you wait on the ingredients you weren't sure about? Are you sure you followed the recipe correctly?
    Heidi Yes!
Daniel (continues stirring from his seat on the benchtop {countertop}, characteristically silent during times of trouble)
Lori Something isn't right. (mentally recalls a kitchen disaster from years ago when a sister used a whole cup of baking soda in a cookie recipe) How much baking powder did you use?
Heidi 2 cups, just like the recipe said, (picks up the recipe card and points), see?
Lori That says 2 teaspoons -- t means teaspoon.
Heidi I couldn't remember what it meant.
    Daniel (still stirring)
Lori (noting the white powder down the side of the kitchen cupboard and strewn across the floor) Show me what you used to measure the baking powder.
Heidi (picks up the 1/2 cup measuring cup) I used two cups.
Lori This is 1/2 cup.  Did you use 1/2 cup or 1 cup?  Never mind.  Daniel, you don't need to stir that anymore.  It is growing.
Heidi Can we still have pancakes?
Lori (beginning to wonder how we will dispose of the growing batter)
I think I can get some fresh flour and borrow some of this batter since the baking powder is all gone.
(mixes up a mock batter to make a few pancakes and is surprised how long they take to cook)
These pancakes won't taste exactly like normal, but they should be ok.
(marvels at how much traction the baking powder adds to the kitchen floor...wonders again how to dispose of ever growing pancake batter which is now spilling over the side of the rather large bowl, then speaks aloud again)
What are we going to do with that bowl of batter?
Heidi Dump it in the bin {trash can}.
Lori That's a good idea.  I hadn't thought of that. I hope no one has to open the bag at the tip {dump}.
Heidi (laughs) These pancakes are the worst pancakes I've ever eaten.
Daniel (breaking his long silence) This is worst case scenario.

Wouldn't life be great if our worst case scenario was only bad pancakes?

Is the problem here my parenting style?  Probably.
Is the problem here my kids' lack of sense?  Probably.
    Is this normal?

    Not a surprise

On a recent Sunday morning, our daughter wore a beautiful dress given to her by a grandmother.  Daniel commented, "Mommy, doesn't Heidi look pretty?"

After the service, as we were preparing to come home, a lady noticed Heidi had soiled the dress while playing on the playground.

Said the lady to our daughter: "Heidi, you've done a fine job of soiling that dress."

Said our daughter to the lady: "I can do better than this!"

Said the lady to our daughter: "No doubt you can!"

    Smarter than average?

When checking Heidi's answers on a math page, we discovered this:

Q:  Would you rather have five nickels or four dimes?

    A:  Both

How can a teacher mark that as a wrong answer? :)  We haven't studied prepositions yet.

    Adventurous Kiwis

08-03-31 051Kiwis are well-known for their adventurous spirits and extreme sports.  Bungy jumping was invented here.  One town advertises a vacation of skydiving, bungy jumping, high-speed jet boat ride and a helicopter ride...all in one day.  We shouldn't have been surprised when a friend at church told us they were going to pet lion cubs.  We didn't think we had heard them right.  When Heidi, our animal lover who wants to be a vet, got wind of the activity, she put it on her list of things to do.  When her marble reward jar was full, she requested this activity as her reward, of course.

We did a bit of research and learned that the "lion cubs" were actually now a year-old and we had one week to get there and pet them before they were to be released08-03-31 025 from this boring life and allowed to live with the mature lions.  Although the event would surely have been more exciting with very young active cubs, their sheer size made petting them an awesome privilege.  In these photos they are about half the size of a full-grown lion.  They were impressive.

Heidi would want you to know that there were clear instructions not to pet the cubs on the head.  When we returned to their enclosure for a second visit late in the day, Heidi forgot the warning and was very impressed with the speed of both the lion cub and the keeper.  The keeper grabbed Heidi's hand away, but not before Heidi saw the lion cub turn his head.  (The photos posted here are earlier in the day.)08-03-31 032

This is an encounter our children will never forget.  Would this even be possible in sue-happy USA?

We are continually awed by the incredible creatures that make up God's creation.

Who wouldn't love a little boy who sleeps with a yo-yo?

08-01 015Our sweet little boy has turned four.  He is a classic case of "all boy."  In his last month of being three he learned how to swing by himself, learned how to ride his bike without training wheels, and adopted a
yo-yo as his most beloved toy.  The yo-yo is a refreshing change since he spent the majority of his third year worshipping balls...any size, any shape, any game.

Today he said, "Mom, I wish I was you."  Mom was thinking, what?  So the response was, "Why do you wish you were me?"  Daniel's answer, given with a look of great admiration, was simply, "Because I like you."

He thinks literally.  Just before Christmas, we decided at the last minute to try and watch a local children's handbell choir that was performing in a concert at the local cathedral.  We had no tickets and couldn't find anyone who knew how to get them, so we decided to go "and try to get in."  Daniel thought that comment was a little strange and said, "Isn't there a door?"

In Sunday School, when the class was asked what is the first thing they think of when someone mentions God, Daniel's answer was, "Someone very important."

We've posted more pictures of him in a new photo album called "Daniel".

    Our Princess is Seven!

It is hard to believe our happy little baby Heidi is now seven years old.  She enjoyed being queen for the day and ordered french toast for breakfast, was surprised with McDs for lunch, and requested steak for dinner.

She recently filled her marble jar (marbles awarded for initiative, immediate obedience, selflessness, etc.) and we timed her reward trip to Lollipops Playland as a family outing today.  She enjoyed being blindfolded and trying to keep track of the car turns to figure out where we were going.  (She did a surprisingly accurate job of that, but she was off enough that removing the blindfold still provided a surprise).  In fact, she enjoyed the blindfold so much that she put it on in the car for the ride home.

A neighbor girl (wearing the sling because she recently broke her arm) came over to share the cake and ice cream.  We haven't figured out why Heidi picked a Scooby Doo cake.  She saw him briefly once.  She looked through the Wilton Cake magazine and chose that one.  Maybe it is his enthusiasm that attracts her!

Heidi said, "Going to Lollipops was betterr than a birthday party."  And, "I didn't think I would get so many presents."  There were five, and some more presents are still on their way from the USA!
